Excel Development Group will develop a new $12 million retail centre in the booming regional township of Emerald.

Highland Central, on the corner of Gregory Highway and Pilot Farm Road, will become the cornerstone retail and service hub for the much anticipated 50ha commercial precinct, Highlands HQ.

Construction started on the precinct recently and is attracting national and local business keen to take advantage of the mining boom.
Excel's development manager Rod Colwell said Emerald had become a pivotal retail centre in the region, with the population expected to exceed 55,000 within five years.

"For the first time, local residents will have a much wider variety of goods and services available, limiting the need to travel long distances to other centres such as Rockhampton and Mackay" he said.

Sales agent CB Richard Ellis' Damian Crocetti said the project was generating significant interest.

"The site's location on Gregory Highway offers over 100m of highly visible retail frontage and stands at 4.6m above the highest-recorded flood levels in the area" he said.

"The 2ha site is approved for 8620sqm of retail floor space for up to 30 tenancies. With central Queensland experiencing an unprecedented growth cycle due to the mining and resources boom, regional centres such as Emerald will become strategically important to national retailers."
